Description

Originally much bigger, this square was cut in two when the N7 road was opened. The Htel des Princes , now Amarys , stood beside it. Known as the Griffin Tavern , in the 17th century it belonged to the Marquis of Brissac and later became the Golden Griffin Inn At right-angles to Avenue de l'Arc, Rue Saint-Jean, the continuation of Rue du Noble, follows the course of the Meyne. Its name recalls the Saint-Jean-de-Jrusalem hospitallers, to whom Princess Tiburge's heirs had given this part of the town. 1682: for some years a dark event had been slowly fading in the minds of the people of Orange: the demolition of their fortress But it was not all over, and in this year the Marquis of Montangues, the King's Lieutenant in Languedoc, came to Orange to bring about the demolition of a rampart built at the chteau and at the same time install a garrison of dragoons and guards. It's worth pointing out that at this same period there was another establishment called the Golden Griffin in the suburb of Langes. We find it mentioned in 1666, when it belonged to the heirs of Jean Chicot. In 1785, still under the same name, it belonged to one J.L. BOUIGARD. Still in existence, restored, improved, enlarged, today it bears the name HOTEL DES PRINCES. On this spot in the 17th century stood an inn called the 'Griffin Lodge', belonging to the Marquis of Brissac. Outside the town walls, this inn provided accommodation for coaches and their passengers waiting to enter the town. The owner of the time undertook not to let in any dishonest person nor enemy of the Prince no player of games of chance, people of low life or poor conversation In 1651, the Marquis sold the Griffin Tavern to Jean Marnet who renamed it Golden Griffin Inn , where in 1682 he received the Mar
